LEED (Leadership in Energy & Environmental Design) certification is an American green building standard, issued by USGBC – US Green Building Council. This can be considered the most popular set of green standards in the world as well as in Vietnam today.

LEED certification is an activity for buildings to use water and energy efficiently, emit less CO2 and make good use of local resources to help reduce energy use during production and transportation, making an important contribution to sustainable development and environmental protection.

Basic benefits that LEED brings to projects:

Increase construction value

Reduce energy and water usage

Increase indoor air quality

Reduce maintenance and operating costs

Reduce construction waste

Promote the use of recycled materials

Promote and attract companies with sustainable goals

Increase employee performance

However, one of the barriers to investing in building construction according to LEED standards is the cost constraint. Depending on the certification level (CERTIFIED, SILVER, GOLD or PLATINUM), projects complying LEED standards will have a higher total investment cost. Choosing appropriate scoring criteria, balancing needs, costs, and long-term benefits for the project is an issue that needs to pay attention.

At LEVA, based on detailed analysis of customers’ needs and experience in industrial engineering, we focus on consulting solutions for customers to achieve GREEN certification for their projects while keeping cost control, harmoniously meeting economic benefits and long-term sustainable values.

ESG is abbreviated by the first 3 letters of Environment, Social and Governance, a set of 3 standards to measure factors related to sustainable development orientation and activities of the business.

The phrase ESG dates back to the 1960s and 1970s, when protests and social movements in the United States and Europe exploded, especially in the areas of the environment and human rights. Events such as protests against the Vietnam War, environmental accidents such as the Exxon Valdez oil spill, and increased attention to labor rights and social interactions have creating a new wave of awareness about the role of businesses in society.

Since then, ESG has gradually become an important part of business and investment strategies, especially after the 2008 global financial crisis. Investors and businesses realize that integrating Environmental, social and good governance factors not only add value to businesses but also help reduce risks and contribute to the sustainable development of both society and the environment.

Recently, LEVA participated in a webinar organized by TUV on March 5, 2024, focusing on important standards such as:

Ensuring business continuity (ISO 22301),

Information and data protection (ISO 27001),

Environmental impact assessment of products and services (ISO 14040 and ISO 14044),

Energy management (ISO 50001) and

Climate measurement, reporting and validation (ISO 14064).

Practicing according to these standards not only ensures that business operations are carried out in a sustainable manner, but also actively contributes to building a global economy that complies with ESG principles.

To contribute to sustainable economic development but at a reasonable cost, the Prime Minister called on the EU to support cheap green capital for Vietnam.

“We hope you will support advanced technology, green and cheap capital for Vietnam”, Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh called on European organizations, businesses and investors at the “Forum and Exhibition on Economic Development”. Green 2022” (Green Economy Forum & Exhibition – GEFE) in the morning of November 28 in Ho Chi Minh City.

Green credit (or green capital) is a capital source lent by financial institutions for green production and investment activities, including environmentally friendly consumption, investment, production and business activities, harmless and contribute to environmental protection.

Sharing at an event organized by EuroCham, the Prime Minister reiterated the goal of becoming a middle-income country by 2030 and a developed country by 2045. However, “Vietnam does not sacrifice progress, social justice and the environment to pursue growth alone,” he affirmed.

During this process, the Prime Minister said that Vietnam expects Europe to support technology, human resource training and capital so that people can access products and services at reasonable prices.

“European enterprises investing in Vietnam and Vietnamese enterprises borrowing capital from the EU must have preferential interest rates. This contributes to reducing input costs, reducing prices for people, suitable for a developing country,” he said.

Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh spoke at the event on the morning of November 28. Photo: Telecom

Some other strengths that Europe can support Vietnam such as advanced governance, strategic infrastructure, emerging economic sectors (green economy, circular economy …) or investment in R&D, …

Vietnam has committed to reducing methane emissions by 30% by 2030, becoming a carbon-neutral country by 2050. The Prime Minister said he will continue to improve the investment environment, reduce input costs, encourage the green economy, digital transformation, circular economy, and reduce administrative procedures for investors and businesses.

According to the recent “Country Report on Climate and Development for Vietnam” by the World Bank Group, the present value estimate of the need for additional investment in climate change adaptation and mitigation measures Climate change between now and 2040 amounts to about 6.8% of GDP per year, or about $368 billion.

Carolyn Turk, World Bank Country Director for Vietnam, said that the goal of becoming a middle-income country in the period of climate change is a “very special challenge” for Vietnam. , but without action, the costs are much greater. “Climate change-related losses could account for 15% of GDP without major investments,” she assessed.

Vietnam doesn’t contribute much in carbon emissions, but the past two decades have emerged as one of the fastest growing per capita greenhouse gas emissions in the world. Its harmful effects are increasing pollution, affecting health and labor productivity. The amount of CO2 per dollar of exports of Vietnam has far exceeded that of neighboring countries, reducing competitiveness.

According to Ms. Turk, public investment will play a pivotal role, but also need to improve policies to attract private capital flows. Along with that, more financial sector reforms are needed to shift abundant savings flows to green investments.

“Private saving in Vietnam is close to 20% of GDP, which is high. Banks need to play a more important role in channeling investments for this money. If only a quarter of the amount of support for green projects is needed, it accounts for 3.5% of GDP,” she said.

In addition, Vietnam can mobilize more finance for green projects through participating in the climate finance market, selling carbon credits to the international market. The World Bank believes that the infrastructure for this market is ready. They and Ho Chi Minh City are currently researching specific solutions to take advantage of this market.

Minister of Industry and Trade Nguyen Hong Dien assessed that the low-carbon, green and circular economy is a new space, opening up job opportunities and a new future. In particular, the EU has experience and is the leader in fighting climate change in the world.

Mr. Dien said that, in addition to promulgating incentive policies, the government is assigning this ministry the task of studying the legalization of the renewable energy sector to encourage investors to participate.

The latest report (6th) on Power Master Plan VIII sets a target that by 2030, the total capacity of power plants will be about 121,757-145,989 MW (excluding rooftop solar power, separate load power supply and copper). broadcast). In which, renewable energy other than hydropower (wind power, solar power, biomass power…) is 21,871-39,486 MW, accounting for 18-27% of total capacity. By 2050, the proportion of this group of power sources is expected to account for 54.9-58.9%.

According to Mr. Dien, to achieve the goal, it is necessary to invest 14.2 billion USD a year in the period to 2030, and 24.4 billion USD in the period 2031-2050. “For successful implementation, in addition to self-effort, international partners are needed to support technology, techniques and preferential capital to develop wind power infrastructure, power transmission, and energy saving infrastructure.” , he said.

Vietnam issued green bonds for the first time in 2019 through Decree 163 of the Government. This turning point creates capital mobilization channels for environmental protection instead of relying solely on funding from banks. In 2020, Vietnam received the first green loan to develop the largest solar power plant in Southeast Asia at that time. The plant is forecast to reduce emissions by about 100,000 tons per year.

Currently, global companies are focusing more and more on ESG (Environmental – Social – Governance, a set of standards to measure factors related to sustainable development and the impact of businesses on the community). As a result, they demand more and more sustainable, high-quality resources in the countries where they operate.

Thanks to that, Vietnam is recording the highest level of investment in renewable energy in the ASEAN region, according to HSBC. In order to attract more FDI and provide foreign companies with more sustainable energy sources, the bank said that Vietnam has shown a strong commitment to renewable energy.

Vietnam is a country with great potential for the development of carbon pricing tools, especially in the development of the domestic carbon market. The Law on Environmental Protection 2020 regulates the organization and development of the carbon market, including the exchange of greenhouse gas emission quotas and carbon credits obtained from the exchange mechanism, offset domestic and international carbon credits. The roadmap for the development of the domestic carbon market is specified in the Government’s Decree No. 06/2022/ND-CP dated January 7, 2022 regulating mitigation of greenhouse gas emissions and protection of the cell layer. thunderstorm.

In recent years, Vietnam has also experienced in implementing a number of mechanisms for exchanging and clearing carbon credits such as: Clean Development Mechanism (CDM) under the framework of the Kyoto Protocol and a number of other mechanisms. bilateral and other voluntary mechanisms.
Carbon pricing is considered as one of the important tools contributing to the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions, including a carbon tax; carbon market; and the mechanism of exchange and offsetting of carbon credits. To date, 46 countries and 35 territories have applied carbon pricing, with the participation of tens of thousands of corporations and large enterprises.

In 2020 alone, valuing carbon brings about 50 billion USD in revenue and especially, about 13 billion tons of CO2 can be managed, equivalent to 23% of total global emissions. Carbon pricing contributes to the achievement of national NDC targets to reduce greenhouse gas emissions. Already, 148 countries have committed to net zero emissions by mid-century, and 120 have updated the NDC to increase their commitment to reducing greenhouse gas emissions.

Korea is a country with a lot of experience in carbon market organization and development as it is one of the few countries that has established and operated an exchange system for greenhouse gas emission quotas and credits early. carbon (K-ETS). Implementation of the K-ETS System has helped Korea control 73% of the total national greenhouse gas emissions and contribute to the achievement of the goal of reducing greenhouse gas emissions

Using rooftop solar power (DMTAM) not only saves costs, protects the environment, but is also considered an effective and investment-worthy power saving solution for localities at the present time.

What are the benefits of installing a rooftop solar power system?

Along with the development of the industrial revolution 4.0, solar energy systems have been gradually gaining popularity in the past few years.

In particular, nature has endowed our country with a suitable geographical position to develop solar energy, stretching from North to South with four sunny seasons all year round, which are favorable opportunities for us to develop solar energy. develop this energy source.

The use of solar energy systems will contribute to saving electricity, increasing production and business efficiency, while protecting the environment and responding to climate change.

Besides, the installation does not take up land; Helps enhance effective heat resistance for works; Having a small scale, distributed installation should be connected to the existing low- and medium-voltage power grids, without the need to invest in additional transmission grid systems.

Currently, solar energy systems are installed on roofs in cities and industrial zones, which has the effect of reducing the overload of the transmission grid from traditional power sources, which are often located far from the centers. populous.

In addition, rooftop solar power with a small scale, suitable to encourage many individuals and organizations to participate in business investment with small capital, achieve the goal of socialization; easily raise capital.

According to the Vietnam Energy Association, to produce 1 MW of solar power, it takes up to 1 ha of land to implement the project. Therefore, rooftop solar power is being widely deployed by many businesses and is receiving a positive response from the people.

According to the National Power Development Plan for the period 2011-2020 (with prospects to 2030), the total national power capacity needs to reach 60,000 MW by 2020, 96,000 MW by 2025 and 130,000 MW by 2030. . However, at present, the total power capacity of the whole system in our country has only reached 45,000 MW.

Therefore, in the planning, priority has been determined to develop electricity from solar energy, which will increase the installed capacity from 6-7 MW in 2017 to 850 MW in 2020 and about 12,000 MW in 2030, equivalent to with 1.6 and 3.3% of the total capacity of both power sources.

Therefore, in order to take advantage of the large roof area in residential areas and businesses, which already have adequate grid infrastructure, convenient to connect to the grid, rooftop solar power is considered as The most effective solution available today.

In addition, the development of rooftop solar PV brings benefits to the State and electricity users. That is to have more clean energy sources with relatively high output (if investment is encouraged), minimize the budget capital invested in power generation projects and power transmission grids.

It is estimated that only about two million roofs in Vietnam need to install rooftop solar PV with a capacity of 10 kW/roof, which will reduce the equivalent of about 16 million tons of coal/year used for coal-fired power.

Allowed to sell electricity to EVN

Notably, the installation of rooftop solar PV reduces maximum electricity costs for the family, the highlight of this power system is that when there is excess electricity that is not in use, customers can sell it back to the Electricity industry, with an average price of 2,068 VND/kWp (According to Decision 11/2017/QD-TTg of the Prime Minister).

Using solar power not only saves costs, protects the environment, but is also considered an energy-saving solution that is worth an effective investment in the present time.

Many preferential policies, supporting DMTAM

Currently, solar power projects are being implemented strongly in Vietnam after the Prime Minister issued Decision No. 11/2017/QD-TTg on the mechanism to encourage the development of solar power projects.

As of April 2019, 1,379 customers in Ho Chi Minh City have installed solar power on the roof. On May 9, 2019, people investing in solar power in Ho Chi Minh City were paid for the first time after a period of generating electricity on the grid.

On April 11, 2017, the Prime Minister issued Decision No. 11/2017/QD-TTg on the mechanism to encourage the development of solar projects in Vietnam, including the selling price of electricity from solar power plants. , including from Solar and Solar Farms is 9.35 US cents/kWh (2086 VND/kWh at 2017 exchange rate).

After that, there was Circular 16/2017 /TT-BCT dated September 12, 2017 of the Ministry of Industry and Trade regulating project development and the Model Power Purchase Agreement applied to Solar PV projects that had promotional contents. encourage and guide the electricity buyers (electricity units belonging to EVN) and the electricity sellers to make electricity purchase and sale contracts on the basis of the Model Contract promulgated by the Ministry of Industry and Trade.

To further encourage the development of Solar Power, on January 8, 2019, the Prime Minister again issued Decision No. 02/2019/QD-TTg on amending a number of articles of Decision No. 11/2017/QD-TTg. on 11/4/2017, in which instead of households investing in DMTAM only selling the remainder of electricity from DMTAM sources as prescribed before (through the clearing mechanism), they will be able to sell the entire amount of electricity produced from DMTAM at a price incentives, still buy electricity from EVN separately at the current price (average 1720 VND/kWh) via 2-way galvanometer.

Electricity of Vietnam (EVN) said that although it has to buy electricity from solar power sources at a price higher than the current average electricity price, it comes from the common interests of society and the interests of the people. enterprises, EVN has been carrying out many activities to support and encourage solar power.

Specifically, EVN has issued documents No. 1337/EVN-KD dated March 21, 2018 and document No. 5113/EVN-KD dated October 9, 2018 to power corporations and Electricity Telecommunications Company. and Information Technology on temporary guidance for rooftop solar projects, including initial guidelines to facilitate business and private investment in solar PV development.

In order to encourage the development of Solar Power, in early May 2019, HDBank said that it will provide special funding for rooftop solar power projects. Specifically: Enterprises investing in rooftop solar power projects will enjoy preferential loans at HDBank with the rate of 70%, the loan term is 5 years.

The main collateral is a rooftop solar power system with a funding level of up to VND 10 billion. This offer is open to all corporate customers across the country. Simultaneously, HDBank also supports affiliate partners specializing in system installation, construction, maintenance and warranty.
